Have Puke Bowl, Will Travel

Parents have been dealing with car sickness since cars were invented.  My little H. Man and I both feel the effects of car sickness on long road trips.  We have learned to cope, using some tested methods over the years.  Being prepared is the most important thing for us.

Keeping the car cool with some fresh air flow is key for us, as is the timing of meals or snacks.  Gum, mints, and sips of Sprite or ginger ale are also helpful for settling upset tummies.  Dramamine and other motion sickness medicines are helpful to some people but we have found that they do not do much for us.  A new idea to try (at least new to us) are Seabands or No Queeze Wristbands.  They are wristbands with a small metal button that presses on your wrist and works by accupressure.  They are available at drugstores.  We have not tried Seabands yet but have heard that work quite well.

If all else fails, being prepared to quickly deal with a mess keeps us moving along.  Some things that we always have in the car, just in case are:  empty Cool Whip tubs with their lids (plastic storage bowls with lids would also work), paper towels, plastic grocery bags or small trash bags, an old towel or two, baby wipes, and Febreze for covering up odor. Don’t forget a change of clothes!

You can read more about car sickness, also called motion sickness, at MedicineNet.com.  Does your family deal with car sickness?  Please feel free to share any tips or strategies that you have found helpful.  Has anyone tried Seabands?

Wanderlust

German, for the irresistibly strong desire to travel or wander – Wanderlust.  I grew up traveling across the country with my family... my parents owned a conference planning business which took us to some major U.S. cities... Atlanta, Denver, New Orleans, Baltimore, San Francisco.  I enjoyed those experiences so much and it made such an impression on me.

Dave and I have always planned to travel but have had some very busy years between work, kids, and home.  The furthest that we have gone away with our family has been to DisneyWorld in Orlando, FL.  Traveling with small kids and babies can be a real challenge and we did not go far for trips, when ours were little.  But now that our youngest, H. Man, is 5 years old, we are ready to do some more extensive traveling.

We are currently planning some trips.  Most will be family vacations but Dave and I have not gotten away alone together in years and we are due.  Our 15th wedding anniversary is coming up and Bora Bora sure does look lovely and relaxing... those little huts over the water.
