Chapter Books

It has been an ongoing challenge for me to find good quality chapter books for my kids to read.  My oldest two each started reading when they were 4 years old.  They moved quickly from beginning readers to the next level – looking for more interesting plots and vocabulary.

I have spent hours looking through book listings on amazon.com and reading book reviews from parents, teachers, and sometimes even kids.  I thought that it might be helpful to share some of our favorite chapter books and series of books.  What are some of your family’s favorites?

The Royal Diaries

My little princess has enjoyed reading these pretty books.  The Royal Diaries is an older series but many of the titles are still available on amazon.com.  Each book is a fictional but historically based journal of some well known and a few lesser known princesses or royals through history.  The books are descriptively written and help the reader to get a sense of what life was like in each particular time period and setting.

Miss J.’s favorite titles in The Royal Diaries series are:  Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor, Jahanara: Princess of Princesses, Marie Antionette: Princess of Versailles, and Catherine: The Great Journey.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Lightning Thief is the first book in Rick Riordan's series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians.  Percy who lives in NYC, is having problems at school and with controlling his temper.  After some exciting events occur, his mother tells him the truth about himself and he ends up at Camp Half-Blood, a training camp for demigods.  Percy finds out that the father he never knew is actually the god Poseidon.  He meets some other half-god friends and adventure ensues.

Other book titles in the series include The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and the final installment of the series, The Last Olympian.  They chronicle the further adventures of Percy Jackson and friends.  There is also The Demigod Files which is a Percy Jackson and the Olympians guide.

My kids enjoy the humor and dialogue as well as the action-packed storylines in this series.  We have tied the Greek mythology of the books in with our homeschool studies of mythology.  For us that mostly involves Greek and Latin root words for vocabulary.
