Picture Book of the Month: George Washington’s Teeth

gwashington-thumbnail

George Washington’s Teeth is a funny, yet informative book written in rhyming verse by poets Chandra and Comora.  They tell a part of our hero’s story that doesn’t usually get much attention.  While the General was fighting battles and leading the troops during the American Revolution, he was also fighting a much more personal battle.

The drawings are lively and the verse is charming.  George Washington’s Teeth lets us see one of our nation’s greatest heroes from a different perspective, as someone dealing with an embarrassing problem - just like we all have to deal with sometimes.  I love witty children’s books!

Puppy Pictures: 14 Weeks Old

Jemma Jane turns 14 weeks old today and is accompanied in this weekly photo by her ‘big sister’.  My sweet, beautiful daughter Miss J. celebrated her 10th birthday this week!  She loves her little puppy sister so much and has done an incredible job helping with Jemma’s training so far.

Miss J. loves the book 101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance and her dog Chalcy.  Using it as a guide, she has been able to teach Jemma to sit, to down, to stay, to come, and to give paw or shake.  Jemma, of course loves being rewarded with tiny treats and Miss J. likes to show off what they have learned.

Watermelon Carving

How amazing are these fancy carved watermelons?  I have seen people make watermelon fruit baskets to serve fruit salad in, on TV and at parties, though I have never attempted one myself.  These watermelon flowers kind of take the whole carving thing to the next level.

I was wondering about nutritional facts for watermelon and came across the web site www.watermelon.org.  They say that watermelon is even higher in Lycopene than tomatoes and that it has heart healthy properties.  Even more reason to enjoy this yummy treat.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Congratulations to the 2010 US World Cup Team and all of their accomplishments!  The kids and I have been enjoying watching our US World Cup team play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  The most exciting moment for us was when Landon Donovan scored the tie-breaking goal against Algeria in the 91st minute.    usa-worldcup-2010-team-thumbnail

The World Cup is being held in and hosted by South Africa this year.  Donovan (a.k.a. Landycakes) and the boys ended their run today against the Black Stars team from Ghana.  Best of luck to the Ghanaian team in representing not only their country but their continent!  Have you been following the 2010 FIFA World Cup?

Puppy Pictures: 13 Weeks Old

Our English Springer Spaniel puppy, Jemma Jane, is 13 weeks old today.  Look at the size of those paws and legs.  She is getting big and looks so different than when we first got her.  At her trip to the vet today, they told us that she is already starting to get some of her adult coat.

Jemma has found a new napping spot this week.  She has been curling up on the fireplace and looks so adorable.  Try not to notice the extremely worn hand-me-down green ottoman in this photo.  It is in dire need of a makeover.

Wild About Zebra Print

zebras-thumbprint

I have been noticing that zebra print is everywhere.  Zebra print can work with a variety of decorating styles from European country to Modern.  The traditional shades of black and white or brown and white are classic.  I also find some of the other tonal variations really appealing, such as cream and white or tan and a spa blue.

What do you think about zebra print?  Have you used it in your home or decorating projects?  Would you use it in a bold way, such as wallpaper or sofa upholstery or do you think that it is better as an accent, such as on an area rug or toss pillow?

Here are some gorgeous decorating items using zebra print.  They are from some of my favorite shopping sources and I have included the links.
